Half of the things that made the sims so funny was the dry sense of humor it seemed to have. EA/Maxis is trying too hard to bring the spark back. There was a lot of "reality" but it still felt like a game. There was still tons to do but it was "normal" stuff if that makes sense. I also loved Apartment Life because you had noisy neighbors through the wall, or autonomous roomies that could be annoying.

My favorite expansion was FreeTime, that added sculpting, ballet, that car hobby, all sorts of things your sims could do. TS2 was a little easier but still challenging, but I don't remember the same "wacky" aspects. Maybe it was because I was a kid, but I always ended up losing most of my family (kids sent to military school, parents depressed, etc.) I loved it, but I was horrible at playing it. And it was really easy to ignore it in TS1 and TS2. There were some quirky elements, but the feel was different to me. Making a career out of it just creates more of a sense of progression and provides you with a small stipend, a la Sims 3 Professions.Ĭow plants were TS2 originally. If I had to guess (I didn't test it directly) the Journalism track probably has a more 9-5 feel to it, and doesn't demand quite as much independent writing from you as the author track does.īasically, you still can write and paint to support yourself without the career if you're so inclined, and if you join the appropriate branch of your career, you'll still be making most of your money that way.

The hours were fairly short and there were LOTS of days off, and the requirements often involved writing and publishing books for yourself. The nature of the job titles and the requirements for promotions made it very clear that your sim only did this 'job' part time, and was meant to supplement the income with royalties from their own books. My Test Legacy founder joined the writing career under the author's branch. I don't get the decisions they made with careers at all. Also I liked that writing/painting were things you could do at home to make money, I don't see the value of making your sim disappear to work to do it.
